EU to invest €150 million for research to counter coronavirus variants
Today, the Commission presented a Communication for the proposed launch
of a European bio-defence preparedness programme called “HERA Incubator”
to address the emerging threat of coronavirus variants. Plans include
important new research investments, mobilising an additional €30 million
from Horizon 2020 to be complemented by a further €120 million from
Horizon Europe.
Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture,
Education and Youth said:
Quote
Research and innovation continue to be crucial in fighting the
continuing challenges of this pandemic. The Hera Incubator and the
reinforcement of European infrastructures and networks, supported by
additional funding from Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe, will help us
deal with any variants and be better prepared for future outbreaks/./

How gut bacteria can protect us from post-stroke brain damage
Probiotics are used by many citizens as a means to preserve or restore
the 'good' bacteria in the gut. The EU-funded MetaBiota project has gone
one step further by demonstrating how these beneficial bacteria - the
microbiota - also have a positive impact on helping stroke patients make
a better recovery. This could open the door to a number of new and
exciting treatment options.

How the ‘physical internet’ could revolutionise the way goods are moved
Shipping goods from furniture to food could be transformed by a new
transport network called the ‘physical internet.’ It is built on similar
principles to the internet, which revolutionised the way information
flows around the word, including open access and global
interconnectedness. Researchers hope to make it a reality by 2040, when
a fully autonomous network should be in place.
