ABSTRACT

Within the systems biology community there has been an increasing interest in employing a systems approach targeting medical problems including complex diseases. In parallel there is a rapid development of genomic technologies and the medical research community has begun to appreciate the need for computational tools in order to deal with the complexity of the data.

Prof. Tegner will talk about his systems biology approach (www.compmed.se) targeting atherosclerosis which is a major killer in the western world. Using gene expression arrays he profiles (a) five different tissues in well characterized by-pass surgery patients, (b) a conditional LDL mouse model for atherosclerosis and (c) the effects of siRNA experiments in THP-1 cells as models for macrophages. Using this approach he has obtained the first draft of the core gene network driving the macrophage related plaque transformation in atherosclerosis. He has now finished the proof-of-concept phase and he is now in the process of expanding our systems approach increasing the number of patients and the number of data-types includine SNP studies .
