Title: Could STACK spark the next (r)evolution?

Abstract: A few years ago education was transformed by a new technology which greatly increased the scale of access to high quality education, the printing press! It changed the world as books became widely available and students all over the world could access the knowledge within. Of course it did not substitute the value of good educators and institutions but it increased educational opportunity immensely.
Despite the promise of more recent technologies, studies are pointing to the conclusion that technology is generally widening educational inequalities more than it is extending the access to high quality education.
This talk will present STACK, an open source question type, which can give personalised student feedback, some specific details of its use at Edinburgh University and how it has started to transform Kenyan Education. There are over 1000 STACK servers worldwide and the talk will explain why Universities anywhere could benefit from STACK questions as part of student formative assessment for technical subjects.
Furthermore the case will also be made for a small change in how Universities use STACK. Building from the idea of open textbooks a claim will be made that this small change could lead to the next education revolution which could immensely increase educational opportunity, without diminishing the value of good educators and institutions. Recent experiences in Ethiopia will be used to highlight this claim.
