Title: Motivating stacks using moduli theory
Abstract: Moduli of algebraic curves are of classical interest. Stated in terms of functors, the problem boils down to the question of representability of the moduli functor by a scheme and existence of a universal family over the said scheme. Existence of non-trivial automorphisms for algebraic curves implies that such moduli problems cannot be solved in the setting of schemes. Historically, attempts to find a reasonable geometric solution to this moduli problem led to the notion of stack. I will attempt to show the problems with the classical theory and give a flavor of how stacks provide a resolution, using, as an example, the moduli of elliptic curves.
