Dear All, save the date!

The next QLS colloquium by Prof. Roop Mallik  will be held on
*Wednesday, 13 April at 11:00AM CET/ 3:30PM IST*. The talk title and
abstract are below:

Title: *MOTORS AND TWEEZERS : FROM PHYSICS TO PHYSIOLOGY *

Abstract:
Molecular Motors are nanoscale machines that transport micron-sized
cargoes such as bacteria, virus and mitochondria inside living cells.
The use of Optical tweezers for measuring the tiny forces and steps
taken by motors has been at the forefront of single-molecule
interdisciplinary research for decades. Unfortunately, such
single-molecule studies cannot be extrapolated easily to understand how
Motors function in Biology. To this end, I will discuss some unexpected
findings from the use of Optical tweezers inside living cells. We will
then change gears and move to an unusual cargo, tiny fat bodies, that
are also transported by motors inside the cells of your liver. In
keeping with the title of this talk, I will discuss how this motion of
fat bodies reflects in a blood test, and how we might possibly be able
to control it for therapeutic benefits.
