Coronavirus: EU support to innovators yields promising results one year on
In the past year, the Commission has invested €226 million through the
European Innovation Council pilot and the European Institute of
Innovation and Technology to support innovative start-ups, small and
medium-sized businesses (SMEs) and projects to develop solutions in the
fight against the coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing crisis. Many of
these companies and projects have already generated promising results.

Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture,
Education and Youth said:

require innovative ideas. The rapid investments to innovative start-ups
and projects through the European Innovation Council and the European
Institute of Innovation and Technology have unlocked a range of

Laser ignition lights up a new era for combustion engines

Until electric cars and other energy-efficient innovations are practical
and affordable to all, the internal combustion engine will continue to
be widely used, with the consequent greenhouse gas emissions. To help
reduce pollution levels, EU-funded researchers have developed new laser
ignition techniques, which have the potential to make combustion engines
far more energy-efficient.

What urban nature really means for insect biodiversity

Parks and green spaces in cities provide health and wellness benefits to
human inhabitants, but they’re not necessarily beneficial for other
urban dwellers – like insects. Researchers are investigating urban
biodiversity with approaches such as ‘bee hotels’ to see how cities can
better foster insect life.
