CMSP News & Views Seminar
/
/
/The News & Views Seminars are meant to address our section as a whole,
and therefore include an extensive pedagogical introduction to the
topic, and present the main physical ideas of the research in a way
understandable by everybody in the section. The goal is to bridge
distances among different subgroups of our diverse CMSP section. //The
diversity in our section makes it a unique place for crossing bridges
among different topics, and for cross-fertilization among seemingly
distant fields. /

_Abstract_:
Scientists have always dealt with higher-dimensional wonderlands. The
contemporary field of topological condensed matter similarly deals with
systems of arbitrary dimensions. With modern technology, synthetic
dimensions can nowadays be quantum engineered in the lab. Thus, for the
first time, we could proposed and realize signatures of high-dimensional
Hall effects in experiments.
In my talk, I will introduce the close relationship between the 2D
quantum Hall effect and 1D topological pumps, where the pump parameters
acts as a synthetic dimension. I will, then, present experimental
realizations of topological pumps using two completely different bosonic
systems, namely, using coupled photonic waveguide arrays and with
trapped atoms in optical superlattices. In the second part of my talk, I
will present how this naturally leads to the realization of the 4D and
6D quantum Hall effects, using correspondingly 2D and 3D topological
pumps. Last, I will detail that the connection between topological pumps
and higher-dimensional quantum Hall models offers a natural
interpretation for high-order topological insulators.
