Twelve finalists in the running for the EIC Horizon Prize for Affordable
High-Tech for Humanitarian Aid
Twelve outstanding solutions made it to the final round of the EIC
Horizon Prize for Affordable High-Tech for Humanitarian Aid. This €5
million prize is run under Horizon 2020, the EU research and innovation
programme, and will reward the best, proven, cost-effective, tech-based
solutions for humanitarian aid. It is divided into five categories:
shelter and related assistance; water, hygiene and sanitation; energy;
health and medical care; and an “open” category.

Commissioner Gabriel said:
Quote

This Prize represents the Commission’s commitment to promote innovation
and technologies that can improve people’s lives, in particular the most
vulnerable. The solutions put forward also demonstrate that technologies
can be applied in an inclusive and affordable manner. I am happy to see
that the Prize attracted new applicants from the EU and across the world.

An EU-funded project has developed a European version of
high-efficiency, next-generation solar technology and a low-cost
manufacturing process. The innovative solar cells could boost a switch

Q&A: How physics could explain why people respond differently to
coronavirus infection

Some people’s immune systems contain pre-existing protection against
coronavirus, indicating that they have encountered a similar infection
to Covid-19 before, according to Dr Aleksandra Walczak, a physicist at
