Higher Order
Topological Phases of Matter

Topological phases of matter have become a thriving sub-field of 
condensed matter physics. In this colloquium I will provide an 
elementary introduction to topological phases of matter, and the new 
discovery of higher order topology. After the basic discussion I will 
describe interesting connections between symmetry, geometry, and 
topology as well as how to create topological phases in artificial 
dimensions.

Professor Taylor Hughesreceived his bachelor's degrees in physics and 
mathematics from the University of Florida in 2003, and went on to 
obtain a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2009, working in the 
condensed matter theory group of Professor Shou-Cheng Zhang. Professor 
Hughes then moved to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a 
postdoc under Professor Eduardo Fradkin, and was hired as faculty there 
in 2011. His research covers a broad range of subjects from topological 
phases of matter, entanglement, and the intersection between high-energy 
physics and condensed matter physics.
