The Brave New World

Neutrinos are the least understood particles of our Standard Model for 
the fundamental building blocks of matter. Measuring neutrino properties 
and identifying how they inform our understanding of nature at the 
smallest distance scales is among the highest priorities of particle 
physics today. I will discuss our current understanding of neutrinos, 
concentrating on the observation of neutrino oscillations and neutrino 
masses and all the open questions that came out of this remarkable 
discovery, more than 20 years ago.

André de Gouvêais a Professor of Physics at Northwestern University. He 
grew up in Rio de Janeiro and got his undergraduate degree in Physics at 
the Catholic University there (PUC-Rio). He received his PhD at UC 
Berkeley and held postdoctoral research positions at CERN and Fermilab 
before landing in Evanston as an Assistant Professor almost twenty years 
ago. He concentrates his research efforts on theoretical and 
phenomenological aspects of fundamental particle physics, especially on 
revealing the new physics behind nonzero, tiny neutrino masses.
