PhD position in Physics with a focus on models of plankton in turbulence

The aim of the planned research is to understand the benefit of 
different shapes and behaviors of plankton in accomplishing important 
goals (such as survival or mating) in a turbulent environment. As an 
approach, the PhD student will use a combination of dynamical systems 
tools and machine learning. First, the motion of a plankton in 
turbulence is modeled using a dynamical system with one or a few control 
parameters, for example swimming speed or preferred swimming direction 
of the plankton. Then, by using machine learning (for example Q-learning 
or deep reinforcement learning) it is possible to find efficient 
strategies of how to adjust the control parameters in response to 
sensory inputs in order to accomplish the goal of the plankton. The 
found strategies will offer a fundamentally new approach for analyzing 
and shedding light on the experimental observations of plankton in 
turbulence.
