Title: The standard model of particle physics from non-commutative
geometry: a new perspective
Abstract: Non-commutative geometry (NCG) is of special physical interest
since, as emphasized by Connes and others, it offers a novel geometric
explanation for certain otherwise-unexplained features of the standard
model of particle physics. In two recent papers (arXiv:1401.5083 and
arXiv:1408.5367) we suggested a reformulation of NCG which had certain
mathematical and physical advantages (compared to the traditional "spectral
triple" formulation), but also two key problems. Recently, Brouder, Bizi
and Besnard (arXiv:1504.03890) pointed out how to naturally resolve those
problems. Building upon Brouder et al's insight, I will present results
from a forthcoming paper (with Shane Farnsworth), where we suggest a
reformulation of NCG in which the fundamental object is an algebra that we
call Omega B. In this reformulation, the traditional NCG axioms are
strikingly simplified and unified; a number of problematic issues in the
traditional NCG construction of the standard model are resolved; and a
certain extension of the standard model of particle physics (with two new
particles) is predicted.
