Dear Colleagues,
A few of us, Dr. Saji Hameed from University of Aizu, Dr. Robert Field from NASA GISS and myself, are co-convening a session for the upcoming AOGS 2012 this August 13-17 in Singapore. We are calling on those who might be interested in speaking or participating in this session. Thedeadline for applications is on March 12, 2012 and notification will be sent on April 9, 2012.

Call for speakers

Applications of high-resolution predictions and analyses in the Asia Pacific region. Closes in 2 weeks, 2 days
The wealth of data and increasing predictive skill allow for large potential gains in early warning and mitigation of impacts from extreme weather and climate. However challenges remain in applying such information to local scales at which they are most needed. The recent years have seen an explosion of high-resolution information, analyses and predictions resulting from new space programs, and regional and other high-resolution analyses and predictions. As an example in forest fire management, we have at our disposal different satellites that provide real-time monitoring of different fire characteristics. MERRA, a new global high-resolution analysis, provides higher resolution reanalyses that can provide much better representation of the hydrological cycle than before. At the same time, exponentially increasing computing power has made high-resolution local models computationally affordable to even the modest of research labs over the world. This session will review these ad
vances and invite contributions that examine how these new developments have improved the understanding and management of our varying and changing climate and environment. We especially welcome contributions related to improved monitoring and predictive skill at varying spatiotemporal scales, and resulting applications in the Asia-Pacific region. Topics of interest in monitoring, prediction and change include advances in data assimilation, statistical and dynamical downscaling, in-situ measurement networks and space-based monitoring. Relevant applications include, but are not limited, to flood and drought mitigation, agriculture and forest management.
