Abstract: The role of the cyclical monotonicity in the context of the mass
transport problem is very important; in particular, it is well known that it is
a necessary condition for a transport plan to be optimal. Less clear is the
situation concerning the sufficiency: it is known that the sufficiency holds
true in simple situations, but also that this is not always the case due to a
counterexample; the task to determine in a more complete way the situations in
which it holds has been also proposed as "open problem" in the book of Villani.
We will present two recent results in this direction, and we will discuss a new
approach to understand the meaning of the cyclical monotonicity
