In 2020, the United States celebrated the 100th anniversary of the 19th
Amendment and the constitutional right to vote for women.
The campaign for women's right to vote lasted for more than 7 decades.
Regarded as the longest-running reform movement in US history, its
participants believed that gaining the right to vote for women was
essential to achieving their political, economic and social equality.
Determined women organized demonstrations, lobbied, presented petitions,
held meetings and went on strike for their rights.
Although the suffragettes were ridiculed, patronized and their ideas
rejected by opponents, they persevered. Some were attacked and resisted
the hardships of prison for daring to claim their rights. The movement
questioned the country's democratic spirit, bringing to light the
country's historic class, territorial and racial divide and shaking
gender stereotypes. Although few of the women who began the suffrage
campaign before the Civil War lived long enough to witness its final
victory in August 1920, their work was carried on by their daughters,
granddaughters, and other women whom they had inspired, nurtured, and
taught. Their collective story is one of courage, perseverance, savvy,
creativity, and hope that continues to inspire women today.

The final throes for the passage of the 19th Amendmentin Memphis were
among the most heated, controversial and colorful. In July of 1920, all
eyes were on the Tennessee capital as anti- and pro-suffragists each
fought for their vision of a socially evolving United States.
