Orphaned, penniless, but ambitious and with a mind crammed with

Barnum, will always be remembered as the man with the gift to blur the
line between reality and fiction. Thirsty for innovation and hungry for
success, the son of a tailor manages to open a wax museum; however, he
soon shifts focus to the unique and the peculiar, introducing
extraordinary, never-seen-before live acts on the circus stage. Now,
some people call Barnum's rich collection of oddities, an outright freak
show; but, when Phineas, obsessed for cheers and respectability, gambles
everything on the opera singer, Jenny Lind, to appeal to a high-brow
audience, he will lose sight of the most crucial aspect of his life: his
family. Will Barnum, the greatest showman, risk it all to be accepted?

·Director: Michael Gracey

*The American Musical Film History. *

**

/The Wizard of Oz/
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wizard_of_Oz_(1939_film)> (1939)
would become a landmark film for movie musical as it experimented with
new technology such as Technicolor
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technicolor>.  It is considered the
greatest movie of all time.

During the 1940s and 1950s, musical films from MGM
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MGM> musicals regularly premiered. /An
American in Paris/
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_American_in_Paris_(film)> (1951) like
other films of the era typically relied on the star power of the film
stars well as the songwriters Comden and Green
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comden_and_Green>, Rodgers and
Hammerstein <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodgers_and_Hammerstein>,
Irving Berlin <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irving_Berlin>, Cole Porter
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cole_Porter>, and the Gershwin Brothers
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Gershwin>.

During the 1960s, films based on stage musicals continued to be critical
and box-office successes, wespecially /West Side Story/
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Side_Story_(1961_film)> (1961) with
music composed by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and
choreography by Jerome Robbins.

In the 1970s, film culture and the changing demographics of filmgoers
placed greater emphasis on gritty realism, while the pure entertainment
and theatricality of classical-era Hollywood musicals was seen as
old-fashioned.   The 1978 film version of /Grease/
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grease_(film)> was a smash hit; its songs
were original compositions done in a 1950s pop style.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, musicals tended to be mainly coming from
the Disney <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney>animated films
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animated_film>.

Since the 21st century, the musical genre was rejuvenated with darker
musicals, musical biopics, musical remakes, epic drama musicals and
comedy-drama musicals such as /Chicago/
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_(2002_film)>(2002) /Mamma Mia!/
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamma_Mia!_(film)> (2008) and /The
Greatest Showman/
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Greatest_Showman> (2017)

Sincerely,
