*SPECIAL UPCOMING EVENT: "LA BARCOLANA",  5 -- 13 October*

*In ten days' time - on Sunday 13 October - the 45th edition of the 
"Barcolana", the most famous sailing regatta in the Mediterranean Sea, 
will take place in the Gulf of Trieste. *Trieste will be full of action 
and events and many tourists, sailing fans, sports journalists, 
sponsors, etc. will crowd the town.

However, *starting from this weekend* until the day of the regatta there 
will be a number of side events, live music in Piazza Unità, kiosks and 
stands on the sea promenade in front of Piazza Unità, offering different 
kinds of sailing products, clothes, gastronomy.Check: www.barcolana.it

*Art Exhibitions*

At the *City's Art Gallery* in Piazza Unita', *solo art show* by 
*Roberto Budicin* entitled "Viaggio nel colore" with colourful 
landscapes. On until 16 October, open every day from 10.00 - 13.00/17.00 
-20.00.

At *LUX Art Gallery* in via Rittmeyer 7/A, Trieste, *solo show* by 
painter *Paolo Cervi Kervischer* entitled "Per tutto l'oro al mondo" 
(For all the gold in the world). Open until 19/10. Closed on Wednesdays 
& Sundays; open on other days: 17.00 -20.00.Free admission.

At *the Sala del Giubileo *in Riva III Novembre, 9:*Group art show on

*Saturday: Open Day at the Art Academy SCUOLA DEL VEDERE ***

*OPEN DAY*on Sat 5/10 at the *Scuola del Vedere *(in Via Rittmeyer 18, 
Trieste) from 10.00 - 20.00 with the presence of artists and teachers. 
At 17.30 artist Raffaella Busdon will give a talk in Italian on the Art 
of Observing to capture the intrinsic meaning of things. Free entrance.

*Book presentation *

*Today at 18.30 in Libreria del Centro BORSATTI, *presentation of 
book*"Armonia con il Feng Shui" (Harmony with Feng Shui) written by 
Manqing Long, daughter of late prof. Lung Chi Wei who was an Associate 
Professor at ICTP. *Manqing Long is a civil Engineer and Architect and 
has a doctorate in Environmental architecture and a specialization in 
Feng Shui. The presentation will be at 18.30 in Italian at Libreria 
Borsatti in Via Ponchielli, 3 - close to Saint Antonio's church downtown.

*Chamber Music con Saturday at Teatro Verdi *

CHAMBER MUSIC AT THE RIDOTTO DEL VERDI (Teatro Verdi, close to Piazza 
Unita') on Sat 5th Oct. at 18.00 dedicated to Richard Wagner and his

At the Giulia shopping centra in via Giulia downtown, there is a 
*Mushroom Exhibition* showing all the mushrooms that can be found in 
this area. Open auntil Sunday 6th October.

jewellery, *you may sign up at the Studiocinque e altro Co. The courses 
last two days each for a limited number of participants (5). The first

If you live downtown and like *swimming and sunbathing throughout the 
year*, the municipality of Trieste has decided that the *Lanterna 
*(called 'El Pedocin' in the Triestine dialect),*/the one and only 
swimming establishment in the whole of Italy which has separate accesses 
for men and women/,* will now be kept open the whole year through. 
During the cold season, water may not be provided but the neighbouring 
thermal pool is equipped with a cafeteria and toilets, in case.

Latin American dancing at Paradiso*

*GUIDED TOUR OF TRIESTE*every day at 10.30 a.m.: A 2 hour guided walking 
tour through the main sites and monuments of Trieste. The tour is in 
Italian and English and costs euro 7/pers. Book your tour by calling the

*The lovely Civico Museo Sartorio is a villa that *once belonged to the 
Sartorio dynasty originally from Sanremo. A branch of the family moved 
in 1775 to Trieste as part of its business expansion. Pietro Sartorio 
here with his family and bought the house, previously owned by the 
merchant family Faraon, originary from Alexandria of Egypt. The last 
heir of the Sartorio family, Baroness Anna Segrè Sartorio, left the 
villa and all its furniture to Trieste's city council with the explicit 
wish to make it a public museum.

The villa was used by the Allies, as their headquarter after WW2, as can 
be seen by the marks on the tiles and walls where the telephone and 
electric leads were brought through. Besides the villa itself being a 
very interesting building architecturally, it contains furniture, 
ceramics, drawings of famous XVII century artists Giambattista Tiepolo 
and alot more. It presently hosts an art exhibition of paintings by 
Giuseppe Bernardino BISON (1762 - 1844) until 13th October. Open Tue-Sun 
from 10.00 - 18.00. Entrance ticket: euro 6.

*The Castle of Duino*is one of the most attractive castles in Europe and 
is still the official residence of the Torre e Tasso royal family. From 
its cliff top location it overlooks a small fishing village and is 
surrounded by extensive gardens. Inside, you can see the furnishings, 
pictures, books and mementoes collected over centuries, visit its 
beautiful park and the World War 2 bunker.Visiting time 9:30 - 17:30. 
Always closed on Tuesdays. Take bus 51 (the airport bus). Ticket price 
for ICTP visitors: Euro 5.Extra visit of the "Old Castle" and the Dama

The *Giant Cave - Grotta Gigante*is considered the largest tourist cave 
in the world, situated in

the Triestine Karst (Carso), half an hour from the city center. An 
exclusive feature of the cave is the horizontal pendulum, constructed by 
university researchers in order to calculate the slightest movements of 
the earth's crust. Visiting times every hour: 10:00 - 18:00. Each visit 
lasts one hour. Entrance ticket:Euro 11/each. For groups of over 15 
persons: Euro 5/head. Take bus 42 from Piazza Oberdan and get off at 
Borgo Grotta, Sgonico -- proceed by foot for 5 minutes -- follow road 
sign for Grotta Gigante. Wear comfortable shoes, no heels. Check

*The Mediterranean Gardens in Sgonico, *recently inaugurated 
and*situated inside the Carsiana Botanical gardens will be open until

*The SLIVIA TOWERS CAVE*at*Aurisina Cave *(Bus nr.44 from Piazza 
Oberdan) is 60 mt. deep and 600 mt. long and is adorned with spectacular 
stalactites and stalagmites, like towers! (The most famous are a group 
of 8 stalagmites, after which the cave is named). The cave can be 
visited by anyone, without particular tools, however sturdy shoes are 
recommended.  Admission: 8,00 euro for adults and 6 euro for 6-12 years.

The *Science Centre Laboratorio dell'Immaginario at the Adriatico 
Guesthouse, *(Grignano), is an interactive and multimedial *museum*. It 
has interesting experiments and videos and more. It hosts exhibitions, 
events and activities with the aim of spreading scientific and 
technological culture. There are special programs for children each 
month. Open January to May and October to December only on Sundays from 
12.00 - 20.00. Open from June to September on Saturdays and Sundays,
