Trieste recently ranked top Italian city with the finest quality of life

Trieste, capital of Friuli Venezia Giulia, is at the top of the list
drawn up by Il Sole 24 Ore in its annual survey of the health of Italian
cities.
Sole 24 ORE's liveability ranking - issued last December after having
surveyed a total of 107 Italian cities - classified Trieste, Belluno and
Sondrio in the first three places, followed by Macerata, Trento, Aosta,
Grosseto, Bolzano, Siena and lastly, Piacenza and Rimini with the same
ratings. The first three cities are situated in North Italy and have
less than 300.000 inhabitants each.
Trieste earned 641 points and rose from 6th place in 2008 to 1st in
2009. In second place was Belluno, which was also second in 2008,
followed in third place by Sondrio, which gained two positions with
respect to 2008, when it was 5th. In 2005 Trieste held the same record
and in 2009, it has once again revealed its potentials and appeal.

The liveability concept accounted for regards a series of economic and
social indicators which confront the development of the territories
examined. Thus it includes assets, work power, relationships between
the citizens and public administration, environment, demography,
culture, outdoor activities, sports, else. The top cities are usually
those that do not have the highest gross national product (GNP), but
that are worthy of note for the quality of life.
The results also reveal that the quality of life in Southern Italy is
not as good as in the North as the cities ranking from 79 to 107 are in
the South. Agrigento, in Sicily, is in the last place, while Milan is
19th and Rome 24th.

In Trieste and Milan each person has an average amount of bank deposits
amounting to 30.000 euro / person. In fact, there are more banks in
Trieste than groceries!

Achieving liveability results in increased vitality, diversity, social
inclusion as well as healthier and more active populations. It brings
economic success, visitor interest and last but not least: beautiful
cities and suburbs.

Trieste is not only the top city for quality of life, but also for
longevity. In fact, it is the place with the highest number of persons
over 100 years of age, probably in connection with the quality of life
based on its beautiful location, environment and nature where one can
easily move around, attend scholastic, artistic, cultural and
intellectual activities, enjoy walks in the woods, hiking, running,
swimming, cycling, wind-surfing, canooing, fitness in a well-planned and
attractive city that has so much to offer to its inhabitants.
