Free-time activities

A R T  &  E X H I B I T I O N S
Inauguration on Monday 27 February 2006 at 18:00 in the Casa d'Aste 
Stadion (Riva Nazario Sauro 6/A) of an exhibition of contemporary art 
entitled "Segni d'Amore", with works on display by 25 different 
artists.  On Saturday 4 March, all the exhibits will be auctioned for 
charity starting at 15:00 in the same auction house.  The proceeds will 
go to the Associazione Amici Hospice Pineta which cares for the 
terminally ill.
Exhibition by the artist Mery Tortolini ongoing in the basement of the 
Adriatico Guesthouse until 10 March 2006.
Exhibition in Galleria Lipanjepuntin Arte Contemporanea, via Diaz 4 
entitled U2 & i by the photographer Anton Corbijn.  A series of shots 
of the rock band taken over the years.  Open until 11 April 2006

Exhibition of over forty photographs taken during a journey to Tibet in 
2004 by Fulvia Fornasaro, Quelli piu' vicini al cielo, can be visited 
in the Sala Mostre Fenice in Galleria Fenice 2 until 3 March 2006.
Ongoing until 30 April in via Carducci 12 is the exhibition entitled 
"L'educazione spezzata" dedicated to the Jewish schools in Trieste and 
Fiume during the period prior to the outbreak of the II World War.  
Open Mon., Tue. and Thur. from 10.30-16.30, Wed. and Fri. from 
8.30-14.30 and Sun. from 11.30-17.30.  Guided tours of the exhibition 
can be booked on 040-633819.
The exhibition entitled "Il tempo della Scuola" documents the history 
of local nursery and primary schools in Trieste from 1841 onwards.  It 
can be visited in the Sala di Palazzo Costanzi in piazza Piccola, 2 
from Monday-Saturday from 10-13 and 16-20 and on Sunday from 10-20.
An exhibition entitled "Una Citta' a bordo" traces Trieste's 
traditional link with cruise ships over the past 90 years.  Open every 
day from 10-19 in the Sala del Ridotto at the Teatro Verdi until Sunday 
5 March.

C A R N I V A L
This weekend marks the last weekend of carnival, leading up to mardi 
gras on Tuesday.  There will be many celebrations and parades locally.  
Here are brief details of a few events:
Trieste
The various 'rioni' (districts) of Servola, Valmaura, S. Giovanni, 
Roiano all celebrate with parades and children's parties over the 
weekend.
In Piazza Unita' there will be live music from 16:00 on Saturday 
afternoon, but the square will be full all day of people in carnival 
outfits, particularly children.  On Sunday morning, from 11-13 there 
will be a children's disco with entertainment.
The carnival parade through the centre of Trieste takes place on 
Tuesday 28 February starting in Piazza Oberdan at 14.30.
Muggia
Muggia celebrates carnival in a big way.  There will be street parties 
and music all weekend, culminating in the parade through the town which 
starts at 1.30 on Sunday.
Opicina
There will be a carnival parade by the villages of Carso starting at 
14:00 on Saturday though the centre of Opicina.

C H I L D R E N's  A C T I V I T I E S
L'Immaginario Scientifico
This science museum (located on the ground floor level of the Adriatico 
Hotel, entrance at the rear of the hotel, opposite the 36 bus stop) has 
exhibits which are particularly suitable for children.
A children's laboratory will be held on Sunday from 15.45-16.45 for 
those aged 4-7 and from 15:30-17:00 for 8-11 year olds.  You can book

C U L T U R E
Encuentro de Tango
At the Caffe' San Marco in via Battisti, 18, there will be the second 
of two evenings dedicated to tango on Saturday 25 February, starting at 
21:30.  Entrance is free and there will be prizes for the best 
costumes, since it is carnival Saturday.  More information from:

S P O R T
Ice-Skating
An ice-skating rink is open at the Fiera buildings until the end of 
March in piazzale de Gasperi (bus 18 from piazza della Borsa).  Opening 
hours will be Monday-Friday 14-22 and Saturday and Sunday 10-22.  The 
cost is 6 euro (including hire of skates) or 3 euro if you take your 
own skates.

T O U R S
Trieste by Bus
Every Saturday a bus leaves for a tour of Trieste from in front of the 
train station at 14.00.  It takes in all of the main sights to see 
downtown, and there is also a 30-minute stop at St. Giusto Castle, 
where you can walk along the Castle walls or visit the Cathedral or 
simply enjoy the spectacular views.  Tickets may be bought in the Sala 
Eurostar in the main railway station and cost 5.20 Euro, with children 
under 10 travelling free.
