The ERC plans to launch the grant competitions under its 2027 Work 
Programme between July 2026 and June 2027, with the calls for proposals 
introducing several changes to the eligibility rules for applications.

        Microbial hockey: bacteria spin micro-discs

Researchers at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) 
have demonstrated that E. coli bacteria can act like microscopic 
"blacksmiths," forming gel-like structures in water and even rotating 
tiny, disc-shaped objects by generating torque. The findings deepen our 
understanding of bacterial behaviour in confined spaces and could pave 
the way for developing new soft materials.

An initiative funded by the ERC invites science journalists worldwide to 
apply for immersive residencies at European research institutions. 
Lasting between three and five months, this offers an opportunity to
