        28 Nov | Webinar on new ERC Plus Grants

The new funding scheme, ERC Plus Grants, is planned to support 
outstanding researchers from Europe and anywhere in the world with bold 
ideas and a vision for transformative research that goes beyond the 
scope of existing ERC programmes. The funding for this new grant scheme 
was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in 
her speech of 5 May 2025 on the ‘Choose Europe’ initiative. In this 
webinar, ERC President Maria Leptin and Head of ERC Scientific 
Management Department Philippe Cupers will outline the ERC Plus Grants.

        Will we run out of groundwater?

Groundwater supplies half the world’s drinking water and irrigates a 
third of its crops, yet it is disappearing fast. How much can we still 
use before it is gone? ERC grantee Marc Bierkens at Utrecht University 
is among the first to map the global overuse of groundwater and its 
consequences for people and ecosystems.

        How our social circle shapes body perception

A scientific study led by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, partially 
funded by the ERC, has found that the size and composition of our social 
support networks directly influence how we perceive our body image. The 
findings could help us in treating conditions such as body dysmorphic 
disorder, anorexia, and other eating disorders.
