Title: Asymptotic sub-Riemannian distances in 2-step nilpotent Lie groups
Abstract: We are interested in the large-scale geometric properties of Riemannian and sub-Riemannian metrics in 2-step nilpotent Lie groups. Given two left-invariant sub-Riemannian metrics $d_1$ and $d_2$ on a simply connected, 2-step nilpotent Lie group, we provide a characterization of the following properties in terms of the underlying sub-Riemannian structure:
1) $d_1$ and $d_2$ are at bounded distance as functions from $G \times G$ to $\mathbb{R}$,
2) $d_1^2$ and $d_2^2$ are at bounded distance as functions from $G \times G$ to $\mathbb{R}$.
This characterization is based on a novel tecnique we developed to perturb horizontal curves in order to displace their end-points in a prescribed vertical direction. This talk is based on a joint work with E. Le Donne, S. Nicolussi Golo, and S-Y Ryoo.
