Speaker: *Dr. João Pita Costa* (IRCAI - International Research Institute
on Artificial Intelligence under the Auspices of UNESCO, Ljubljana,
Slovenia)
Title: *AI-powered data-driven and bias-aware approach for governments,
analysts and researchers to identify and react to SDG challenges*
Abstract: Entering the age of Big Data, Artificial Intelligence is
feeding the data-driven digital transformation across industries and
evidence-based decision-making by the leadership across companies and
local authorities. It is essential to highlight the meaningfulness of
those approaches, transferring them to opportunities that are coming to
the water sector as well. The amount and heterogeneity of data generated
allied to the rapid progress of scientific research and consequent
technological development allow for a new reality in regards to
sustainability. While the frequency of the data ingested and the dynamic
of what is being observed can dictate the different pace that real-time
observation can take, the usefulness of the insightful information
digested from that data in the context of priorities within the workflow
and ethics concerns of governments, professionals and communities will
dictate its meaningfulness. This talk will discuss the work done by
IRCAI acting as a centrepiece to global change from research to
corporate supporting UNESCO's guidelines in regards to an ethical and
responsible AI to advance the Sustainable Development Goals.
Short bio: João Pita Costa is a PhD in Mathematics from the University
of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and he is a senior researcher at the
International Research Center for Artificial Intelligence under the
auspices of UNESCO - IRCAI - where he is leading the development of an
AI-driven SDG observatory, including the focus on the ethics of AI. He
worked as a researcher in topological data analysis at the Institute
Jozef Stefan, extending this collaboration as senior researcher in the
spin-off Quintelligence, where he took a key role in the MIDAS project
using Big Data to support policy making in public health and
contributing to the effort against COVID19 through AI. He is also a
lecturer on AI-related topics at the Barcelona Business School, ENEB. He
was head of marketing at the bioinformatics SME Genialis.
