European Commission unveils European Digital Twin of the Ocean
        prototype

Today at the Digital Ocean Forum (DOF) 2024, European Commissioner for
Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Iliana Ivanova and
other high-level representatives from Belgium, France and the European
Commission unveiled the first pre-operational platform of the European
Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO).

Commissioner Ivanova said:

“/I am thrilled to announce that as from today, the European Digital
Twin of the Ocean is accessible to everyone for testing, for using
or for contributions. Thanks to the investment from the EU research
and innovation programme Horizon Europe, it will help us understand
how pollution and human activities affect the ocean and its critical
role in regulating the climate and preserving biodiversity. It is
still a prototype, but once it’s fully up and running, the platform
will become a game-changer in ocean management, providing essential
    information and precise, real-time predictions/”.

Building a ‘highway to Brussels’ from the EU’s rural regions

Spanning four years, the SHERPA project aimed to connect rural European
communities with decision-making at a local level. Encouraging open
conversations and idea-sharing between stakeholders, it enabled local
knowledge to inform policies on issues such as climate change, land use
and the diversification of the rural economy.

AI and other digital techs: a revolution in knowledge valorisation?

How will artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital technologies
change the way we valorise scientific knowledge? How to use them to make
it more accessible for businesses, public administration, education, or
other areas of public life? These are the main questions we will discuss
during the webinar.

Resisting authoritarian populism: Commission’s Ethics Group
issues new Statement on defending democracy and its values

Commission Vice-President Dubravka Šuica has received, today, a
Statement on “Defending democracy in Europe: Addressing the threat of
authoritarian populism and reinforcing democratic practice” from the
European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE), an
independent advisory body to the Commission.

Vice-President Šuica said:

“Recent events, across Europe and around the world, show that we
resolutely need to protect our democracies and the values and
fundamental rights that underpin them. I was not born in a
democracy, so I have a profound understanding of the importance of
nurturing these values. The EGE recommends deep transformations of
the societal institutions that shape how we relate to each other and
how we identify as Europeans. This calls upon all of us to address
the more profound causes of these democratic challenges and to think
beyond ‘quick fixes’. As the EGE so succinctly stated: We can all
benefit from a rich set of democratic practices.”
