Latest news from the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change
New Mission Story out now!
The latest Mission Story focuses on implementing green infrastructure
and nature-based solutions at a local level in Zagreb to increase the
climate resilience of the whole city.
The Zagreb story is a promising example of what climate-resilient cities
could look like to combat increased temperatures in cities due to
climate change and urbanisation processes. Such green structures
contribute to the cooling of city blocks by several degrees and offer a
broad range of co-benefits to cities plagued by heat stress. In planning
nature-based solutions, it is essential to involve all relevant
stakeholders to fit the adaptation measure to the local circumstances
and the wider context.

UN Adaptation Gap Report Published
The UN Environment Programme has published its /Adaptation Gap Report
2023: Underfinanced, underprepared, inadequate investment and planning
on climate adaptation leaves the world exposed./
The report raises concerns that progress on climate adaptation is
slowing when it should be accelerating to catch up with the rising
climate change impacts. It also highlights that the finance needs of
adaptation in developing countries are 10 to 18 times larger than
international public finance flows available to support.
The report goes on to suggest seven ways to increase financing,
including through domestic expenditure and international and private
sector finance, to reduce this adaptation gap.

LIFE Programme projects announced
The European Commission has announced EUR 396 million in funding for 171
new LIFE projects across Europe.
In total, 34 projects worth about EUR 110 million (in which the EU will
provide around EUR 65 million) will contribute to climate change
mitigation, climate change adaptation and climate governance and
information related to climate change impacts.
They will boost the implementation of the European Climate Law and the
EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change Strategy by facilitating the
shift towards a climate-neutral, sustainable and resilient European economy.

Finding the heat-spot: Tracking and pre-empting wildfires,
droughts and floods in Greece and beyond
Mission project, IMPETUS, has published an article exploring the
solutions available to combat harsh climate events such as wildfires,
flash floods and extreme temperatures.
To address these climate challenges and prioritize areas for adaptation,
partners in the IMPETUS project are working on new digital tools such as
the Hot-spot Identification and Prioritization Service – HIPS.
This online tool combines satellite climate data with population
information to identify regions lacking the means to cope with climate risk.

Don’t miss the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change side event
/“Adaptation beyond borders: An EU Mission towards climate resilience”/
at COP28 next month!
The event will highlight the EU Mission as an innovative initiative that
unites European regions and local actors in addressing climate change
adaptation challenges. By learning from the EU's experience and
innovative approach, we aspire to encourage international collaboration
and action at the local level.

Mission Adaptation Series: Spotting the Risks of Maladaptation
Together.
In this lunchtime webinar, we explore how to reduce the risk of failing
to adequately adapt to climate change.
The online event will introduce the concept of maladaptation and why it
matters in every climate adaptation project. Maladaptation is when
adaptation goes wrong, or actions have direct or indirect negative
outcomes that are usually unintended.
We want to create a learning environment that is as hands-on as
possible, so we will work together with participants to apply the
maladaptation checklist in an urban heat example and run a Q&A session
to clarify any questions around the concept of maladaptation and
spotting risks in the planning phase.

Climate Governance Platforms: A Springboard for Transformational
Adaptation through Informed Decision Making
This webinar will bring together experts, professionals from relevant
fields and demonstrators implementing such solutions to discuss how
climate governance platforms can be the catalyst for meaningful change.
We will explore the role of data-driven decision-making in achieving
sustainability goals, building resilience, and contributing to
transformational adaptation.
This event is part of the EU TransformAr Project, which aims to promote
large-scale transformative adaptation in vulnerable European regions.
