Summer 2023
In this issue of the Magazine, we take a closer look at research
assessment. ERC President Maria Leptin explains what changes have lately
been introduced to the assessment of ERC grant proposals and why. Our
guest expert James Wilsdon, director of UK Research on Research
Institute, writes about the current global trends in this field. And
with ERC grantee Anja Leist, we zero in on the narrative curriculum
vitae for grant applicants.
Research assessment
Maria Leptin on the context and content of changes in ERC project
proposal evaluations
In December 2022, the Scientific Council of the ERC announced plans for
changes to the evaluation forms and processes that are used to decide
which research proposals to fund. What was the rationale and what ended
up in the recently adopted Work Programme.
/“The proposals will continue to be judged on their originality,
creativity and ground-breaking ideas.”/

Outside view: Head of Research on Research Institute on the journey to
responsible and experimental research funding
There is a global drive for more responsible and inclusive cultures of
research assessment. This often goes hand in hand with a shift towards
more systematic experimentation with modes and methods of research
funding, explains James Wilsdon, director of the UK’s Research on
Research Institute.
/“Realising more of the potential of the US$ 2.5 trillion being invested
annually in R&D worldwide will require […] more responsible assessment,
richer experimentation and more sophisticated research on research.”/

Narrative CVs – a good idea?
In the upcoming ERC grant competitions, the applicants will be asked to
write a narrative curriculum vitae. ERC grantee Anja Leist took part in
calls where this type of CV was required and she also reviewed proposals
with narrative track records. She shared with us what she learned.
/“It all comes more naturally with a narrative CV because you write it
in an explanatory mode. The narrative CV is good for explaining things
that wouldn't be visible in traditional forms of metrics measurement
like my contribution to the open science movement…”/
