European Research and Innovation Days 2021: we need EU research and 
innovation to ensure a sustainable Europe
Europe’s collaborative research and innovation are key drivers for a 
greener, healthier and more digital future for all. This was the main 
theme of the third European Research and Innovation Days this week. Its 
over 21,000 registered participants from 105 countries stressed the need 
for Europe to remain at the forefront of research and innovation to 
achieve a sustainable future for all.

Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, 
Education and Youth said:

	The European Research and Innovation Days sparked energy, creativity 
and dedication amongst its 21,000 participants, stressing the importance 
of investments in research and innovation across Europe. We can make a 
real difference in the lives of Europeans and society as a whole by

Success stories
Building a more efficient solar cell

Today’s silicon-based solar cells are limited in that they can only 
absorb energy from a single band of light. That’s why the EU-funded 
PERTPV project is using perovskite-based materials to build a new type 
of solar cell. This should lead to more powerful, efficient and 
sustainable solar panels that will benefit citizens as much as the planet.

27th Meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Regional Platform 
in Research and Innovation
The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Regional Platform in Research and 
Innovation will host this meeting of National Focal Points, the aim of 
which is to adopt the Roadmaps & Theories of Change and Impact Pathways 
developed by the Expert Group of the UfM and according to the three 
priorities of Climate Change, Renewable Energies, and Health. The 
meeting will take place from 09:00 – 12:15 CET.
