New EGE statement on ethics and governance shows how values and
democracy are necessary for responsible future making
Today the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE)
published its Statement “Values for the future: the role of ethics in
European and global governance”. The group suggests that only a
profoundly inclusive deliberation on values can ensure a shared,
egalitarian and sustainable future making.

The Statement provides important perspectives on the role of ethics in
human societies and their governing institutions. Looking at the current
crises the global community faces, from the pandemic to climate change
and migration, it warns about the increasing pressure on values and
fundamental rights. The Statement emphasises how every human
intervention in the world is shaped by values – whether consciously or
unconsciously, explicitly or implicitly.

OpenAIRE-Advance helps move Europe further down the open science path

The easier knowledge can be spread, the faster science can move forward.
The OpenAIRE initiative has been spearheading this vision since 2008
with the goal of setting European science free. Most recently, the
EU-funded OpenAIRE-Advance project went a step further by making open
access to research the default option across Europe, bringing science
truly closer to citizens.

ECCA 2021 – 5th European Climate Change Adaptation conference
2021 is the year of climate adaptation. ECCA 2021 comes at the right
time, after the first global Climate Adaptation Summit in January 2021,
and before the COP 26 in Glasgow in November 2021. It will turn the
spotlight on the pressing need to accelerate the transfer of knowledge
from R&I to policies and practices, including societal transformation an
behavioural change, in order to increase resilience in Europe and
beyond, in a context of rising climate risks.

What is the bioeconomy and how could it help fight climate change?

A circular bioeconomy – which turns renewable biological resources and
waste streams into new products – is at the heart of the EU’s efforts to
slash its carbon emissions while also maintaining economic growth. But
what does a bioeconomy look like and how do we get there?
