Five Western Balkan partners join Horizon Europe research and innovation 
programme
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia 
signed today, alongside Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, 
Research, Culture, Education and Youth, their Association Agreements to 
the Horizon Europe programme. Albania is expected to follow with the 
association in the upcoming weeks. This marks an important milestone for 
closer research and innovation cooperation with the Western Balkans.

Commissioner Mariya Gabriel said:

    /"I welcome Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North
    Macedonia, and Serbia to Horizon Europe. We can attract investment,
    develop human capital, support start-ups and create the necessary
    conditions for growth by working together. The implementation of the
    Western Balkans Agenda and participation in Horizon Europe will have
    a great impact in the region and in Europe overall."/

Success stories
Supercomputers help save lives during natural disasters

Natural disasters threaten citizens around the world with disruption to 
essential services, damage to property and infrastructure, and the loss 
of life. The EU-funded ChEESE project uses supercomputing to help 
forecast accurate disaster scenarios. As a result, authorities in La 
Palma were able to make informed decisions and save lives when the 
Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted.

EU Research & Innovation Days report: EU research and innovation is key 
enabler to tackle climate change, fight cancer and protect our oceans 
and water
This is the main conclusion from the 21,000 participants and 200 
high-level speakers who took part in the 2021 European Research and 
Innovation Days, according to the Commission’s conference report 
published today.
The report contains summaries and quotes from the event’s 70 online live 
sessions and workshops, as well as from over 200 consultations between 
participants and Commission representatives at the virtual Horizon Village.
