Galactic Phylogenetics

Reconstructing the history of galaxies requires understanding the 
complexity of several astrophysical phenomena, from star formation to 
supernova yields and galaxy interaction. Combining this information is 
not trivial, leading us often to a fragmented story of how our own 
Galaxy assembled.

Stars are the main carriers of the evolutionary information. They are 
the main producers of metals in the Universe, inheriting the modified 
chemical composition down for generations. With their chemical data from 
spectroscopic surveys, combined with their kinematics from Gaia and 
their ages from stellar models, we are starting to assemble huge stellar 
samples that are helping us to put the fragmented stories of Milky Way 
evolution into one.

In this talk I will first discuss the challenges our field is facing in 
assembling the chemical data from spectroscopic surveys into single 
consistent datasets. Then I will discuss how can we use phylogenetic 
trees in order to put this vast information together to study the 
different astrophysical phenomena shaping the evolution of our Galaxy.

Paula Jofréis an assistant professor of the Astronomy Nucleus at the 
University Diego Portales (UDP). She studied Astronomy in the Pontific 
Catholic University of Chile and obtained her PhD in Natural Sciences 
from the Ludwig Maximilian University and the Max Planck Institute of 
Astrophysics in Germany. She spent 7 years as a post-doctoral 
researcher, first working in the Laboratory of Astrophysics of the 
University of Bordeaux in France and then in the Institute of Astronomy 
and King’s College of the University of Cambridge, UK.

Professor Jofré is a world-leading expert in Galactic astronomy, focused 
on the analysis of stellar spectra to understand the physical processes 
that shape the Milky Way. She has been selected one of the 100 Chilean 
Women Leaders by El Mercurio and Mujeres Empresarias in 2011 and 2018, 
awarded 10 Scientists-to-Watch by Science News in 2018, and chosen for 
TIME 100 Next in 2019.
