    FOCUS

Ethics and Data Protection in Horizon 2020

Personal data provide great opportunities for European research
and innovation. At the same time, there are considerable privacy
risks. It is thus crucial to comply with ethical and legal standards.

The protection of personal information is a fundamental human right.
Recently, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has come into
force, which aims at harmonising data privacy laws across Europe.

Against this background, Horizon 2020 projects are often confronted with
legal and ethical challenges. For example: How should personal
information be transferred to non-EU countries? Should data be deleted
when a research project has come to its end, or stored so that other
researchers can verify the results? How should the principle of informed
consent be dealt with when it comes to publicly available information on
the internet? And what should be done when children and other vulnerable
groups are involved?

Fortunately, there are different resources that can help in finding the
best answers to such questions: your institution may have a Data
Protection Officer who is qualified to provide specific guidance,
guidelines of the European Commission

or other institutions can facilitate your decision making, and last but
not least, do not hesitate to contact the Euresearch Office in your
Region or your dedicated National Contact Point for further information.
We will be happy to support you.

SSH in mission-oriented research programmes. One of the key demands
states that SSH should be considered from the very beginning when
addressing global challenges. The document contains specific
recommendations for programme officers, panelists and programme evaluators.
