*Front-ends and Data Acquisition system for COMPASS-like experiments beyond 2020*
Abstract:
COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS developed a novel type of Data
Acquisition system where all data processing including event building is
performed by FPGA-based modules. The highly scalable system is designed
to handle 1.5 GB of data per second. It features compactness, low cost
and high reliability. In 2017 the system has achieved an uptime
performance of above 99%. For future programs of the experiment it is
planned to change read out paradigm and employ a triggerless concept.
FPGA technology will continue to play a key role in the new system. The
data acquisition will be adapted to the new condition and will be
upgraded to handle more than 10 GBytes of data per second. Data
reduction will be achieved by implementing filtering algorithms in FPGAs
and integrating them in the DAQ.An architecture of the COMPASS DAQ will
be presented. It will be followed by a discussion of new developments of
the triggerless DAQ.
