ESSAYS ON CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE SAHEL: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

Alessandra Giannini
IRI for Climate and Society
The Earth Institute at Columbia University
Palisades NY, U.S.A.

It is now established that late 20th century drought in the Sahel was
caused by subtle changes in global sea surface temperatures.
I will discuss a re-interpretation of the influence of the oceans on the
climate of this semi-arid/marginal monsoon region to bridge
interpretation of interannual climate variability and theory of climate
change in view of explaining past [including drought attribution],
present and future.
