    FOCUS

    Happy Birthday, ERC!

*"The ERC could become a Champions' League for research", Angela Merkel
said in 2007, when the European Research Council (ERC) was launched in
Berlin. Expectations for the newly funded ERC were very high. Now, 10
years later, the ERC has exceeded all expectations: Some 7 000 research
leaders and over 50 000 team members have received a total of €12
billion in funding. 6 Nobel Prizes and 4 Field Medals have been awarded
to ERC grantees. Some 100 000 articles have been published in scientific
journals, including 5 500 articles in the top 1% most-cited scientific
journals. What impresses me most is that, thanks to the ERC, Europe has
surpassed the USA in the number of most-cited publications in the top 1%.*

But only using statistics to describe its success would not do the ERC
justice. The ERC has changed the European research landscape
dramatically in many aspects. It has inspired many countries to create
their own national research councils, has influenced their national
research funding programmes and has become a model for funding high-risk
research. A recent ERC project highlight was the discovery by an ERC
Advanced grantee of 7 potentially inhabitable planets.

We all know that the ERC is also a great success in Switzerland.
Researchers in Switzerland have won more than 500 grants, worth around
€1 billion, and have the highest overall success rate of any country.

We truly hope that the ERC success story (or should we say: love
story?), both in Europe and in Switzerland, will continue for many
years. Happy Birthday, ERC!

/Katja Wirth, National Contact Point ERC and member of the Management Board/
