will speak on

Cyclic branched covers of knots and finite group actions on 3-manifolds.

Abstract: Given a knot in the 3-sphere and an integer number $n$,  it is possible to construct  the  $n$-fold cyclic branched cover of the knot, that is a closed and orientable 3-manifold  uniquely determined by the knot and by the integer $n$.  
On the other hand the possible representation of a 3-manifold as cyclic branched cover of a knot is in general  not unique. The characterization of the  set of knots having in common a cyclic branched cover is a natural problem that is not yet completely understood. In this talk I will present some recent results on this problem, which are obtained by analyzing the class of finite groups admitting an action on 3-manifolds that are  the cyclic branched cover of a knot.
