Title: Introduction to Bernstein-Sato polynomials
Abstract: Bernstein-Sato polynomials, introduced independently by
J. Bernstein (1971) and M. Sato ('60-'70), are polynomials defined
by certain functional equations involving the complex powers $f^s$ of
a (real-)analytic function $f$. Their first application was to the
problem of meromorphic continuation of distributions, but they were
later discovered to be important also from the point of view of
singularity theory, starting from Malgrange's discovery of their
connection with the monodromy of vanishing cycles of the function.
The talk is intended to be an introductory survey of some classical
results in this field.
