SUMMER SCHOOL IN SUSTAINABLE BLUE GROWTH IN SOUTH EAST EUROPE
A JOINT PROJECT OGS- ROBERT BOSCH FOUNDATION

ICTP ADRIATICO GUESTHOUSE BUILDING, TRIESTE
The Summer School in Sustainable Blue Growth
will be held in Trieste, Italy on July 14-18, 2014

Taking into consideration the current economic situation, there is a
need for new skills to enable multidisciplinary and integrated
approaches, for generating innovation, advanced sciences and competitive
technologies. The aim of the school is two fold:
1) to increase the professional skills and the quality of research in
the field of marine sciences, climate related aspects, environmental
protection and integrated management of coastal areas; 2) to increase
the educational offer to extend the current economic development and
growth, with particular focus on activities and aspects related to the sea.
The EU Blue Growth Initiative is a long-term strategy to support growth
in the maritime sector as a whole by harnessing the untapped potential
of Europe's oceans, seas and coasts for jobs and growth. Establishing
appropriate training and mobility opportunities for a new generation of
ma- rine scientists which possess both cross and transdisciplinary
skills represents an important part of this strategy.
We intend to support the creation of stable and attractive career
pathways and the highly skilled talents that will be needed to support
expanding marine and maritime sectors. The challenging questions for
marine sciences in this century revolve around systems and their
interactions, and address scenarios that include the role of people,
economics and policies. Tackling climate change, understanding ecosystem
function, managing sustainability: all of these require a much more
extended mindset than was typical even a decade ago.
UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY
In this context, together with the Robert Bosch Stiftung Foundation and
other partner- institutions i.e. the Abdus Salam International Centre
for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the Central European Initiative (CEI)
and the University of Trieste, the University of Udine, OGS (National
Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics) is organizing a one-
week training school in Trieste for researchers, scientists and managers
from South East Europe. The focus of the Summer School is on
strengthening professional skills in the field of oceanography, marine
sciences and blue growth.
The training is addressed to participants from South East Europe: namely
Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Macedonia,
Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey and Ukraine.
Participants from Italy and Germany will be also invited to participate.
No registration fees are required. Candidates are requested to register
and submit their candidature online (http://summerschool.inogs.it).
Applications supported by the candidate's home Institution are
recommended and will be taken in particular consideration. Selected
candidates will be granted fellowships covering their expenses for
travel and accommodation. Candidates not requesting fellowships will be
also evaluated for admission and invited to participate in case of
successful application.

The Summer School will represent a first step of a broader programme
with the aim of increasing an educational offer focused on activities
and aspects related to the sea and supporting economic development and
growth, also enhancing collaborations among Countries from South East
Europe.
We hope that you will plan to attend and will encourage others to do so.
