> The interplay between strong correlations and topology is a fast-developing and fascinating subject in the field of condensed matter.
> Recently, the existence of topological Kondo insulators (TKIs) has been theoretically proposed [1]. In these materials the insulating behavior arises from strong correlations, that is from the Kondo screening of localized moments via conduction electrons, while non-trivial topology emerges from the structure of the hybridization between the local-moment and conduction bands.
> SmB6, long known as a Kondo insulator, is the main TKI candidate compound [2], and currently subject of intense experimental and theoretical investigation.
> In this talk I will first of all present the concept of TKI and the main properties of SmB6.
> I will then address the more specific problem of Kondo holes and of quasiparticle interference in TKIs, using a self-consistent real-space mean-field theory, first in a toy-model for Ce compounds [3], then in a realistic tight-binding description for SmB6 [4].
