"Arrhenius law out of equilibrium"



Abstract

 

The Arrhenius law appears in many different physical contexts.  It is one of the most important laws governing the behavior of systems characterized by energy scales which are much smaller than the temperature.  We shall derive and discuss its extension out of equilibrium. We will focus on classical systems which are out of equilibrium either because they are subjected to non-potential forces or because they are coupled to an out of equilibrium thermal bath.   A generalization of time-reversal, that already emerged in the context of fluctuation theorems out of equilibrium, plays a key role in our derivation and will be discussed thoroughly. We shall conclude by discussing applications and further extensions of our results.
