We are pleased to announce that the

*2011 ICTP Prize*

**

is awarded to

**

*Ado Jorio*

Departamento de Fisica

Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

Belo Horizonte, Brasil

in honour of

*Praveen Chaudhari*

**

*Ado Jorio de Vasconcelos *is recognized for his Raman spectroscopy work
on single carbon nanotubes that has clarified their electronic and
vibrational properties.

**

Jorio's main research interest is in the physics of nano-materials. He
developed experimental techniques to probe the geometrical and
electronic properties of single carbon nano-tubes. This work had a major
impact in the field of photo-physics in nano-structures, Raman
spectroscopy of low dimensional dimensional systems and nano-metrology.
He is an associate professor in the Department of Physics at the Federal
University of Minas Gerais, having earned his PhD at the same university
in 1999. He worked for two years as a post-doctoral fellow at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA.

*Praveen Chaudhari*(1937-2010) has made fundamental contributions to
condensed matter physics and material science. He has worked on the
structure and properties of amorphous solids, mechanical properties of
thin films, defects in solids, quantum transport in disordered systems
and superconductivity. One of his main achievements is the discovery and
development of amorphous magnetic materials, that are the basis of
erasable, read-write, optical storage technology. Professor Chaudhari
had strong ties with the ICTP.He served as the Chairman of the
Scientific Council from 1998 to 2002.
