ABSTRACT

Today, the field of genetics plays an increasingly important role in both the diagnosis and management of many diseases and illnesses. In the United States, genetic counselors are an important part of the management and care for people with genetic conditions. Genetic counselors work as members of a health care team by serving as a patient advocates and by providing information and support to families with genetic disorders. Genetic counselors also help educate people about genetics with an increasing number involved in research laboratories that study specific medical conditions.
This seminar will serve as an introduction to genetic counseling. It will demonstrate and explain some of the tools and methods used by genetic counselors in both clinical and research settings. It will also discuss how the rapidly expanding field of medical genetics incorporates different testing methodologies in order to accurately identify, diagnose and treat individuals with genetic diseases. Finally, it will discuss how genetic research being completed in places such as Italy and the United States is helping to better identify individuals at risk for complex disorders like heart disease and cardiomyopathy.
