INTERANNUAL VARIABILITY IN THE TROPICAL ATLANTIC IN DIFFERENT OCEAN
STATE ESTIMATES
Abstract
Insight into Tropical Atlantic Variability (TAV) in recent ocean state
estimates is presented with the focus on (1) the two leading modes of
climate variability in this region, the equatorial or zonal mode, that
is similar to the El Nino mode in the Pacific, and the meridional or
gradient mode, that is unique to the tropical Atlantic, and (2) the
shallow subtropical-tropical meridional overturning circulation,
the subtropical cells (STCs). We investigate to what extent the
Atlantic Nino mode, the gradient mode, and the Atlantic
intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) are connected and how SST
variability related to the Pacific Nino influences the shallow cells
in the Atlantic.
Everyone is welcome.
