CONSERVATIVE SEMI-LAGRANGIAN METHODS
Mass conservative variants of the semi-Lagrangian method
for the tracer advection equation will be reviewed.
These techniques have been developed over the last 15 years
by a number of authors (Machenhauer, Lin, Laprise and others)
in order to overcome the main shortcoming of the semi-Lagrangian
approach to the discretization of advection. The different
conservative SL methods will be presented in detail, with special
attention to the semi-Lagrangian Discontinous Galerkin method
(Restelli, Bonaventura and Sacco, JCP 2006),
highlighting their advantages for atmospheric and oceanic modelling,
as well as the open issues that still need to be addressed
to exploit their full potential.
Everyone is welcome.
