ABSTRACT

The Plasma and Ion Source Technology Group at the Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory has been developing compact neutron generators
for the last decade. The neutrons from these generators are produced
by the D-D. D-T or T-T fusion reaction. The main components of these
generators are the RF-driven ion source, an electrostatic accelerator
and a beam-loaded Ti target. These generators can be operated either
in pulsed or cw mode with neutron flux higher than 10^15 n/s.
Different configurations of neutron generators have been developed
according to specific applications. Today, these compact neutron
generators are being employed in oil-well logging, nuclear physics,
homeland security, material analysis, neutron capture therapy (NCT),
brachytherapy, neutron imaging, fusion and fission reactors and
radioisotope production.
