Perimeter Institute in Canada is hosting a Quantum Foundations Summer
School (QFSS) this summer from August 27th to 31st.   This is a new
opportunity for your Graduate Students to learn about Quantum
Foundations and enjoy a visit to Perimeter Institute for Theoretical
Physics.

The Institute will host up to 40 Graduate Students with all expenses
paid – including international travel, a per diem, a banquet, and
accommodation.  Applications are encouraged from all Graduate Students
studying in any area of fundamental physics (string theory, particle
physics, cosmology, quantum gravity, quantum information and other
disciplines).

Eligible students must apply by Sunday, May 20, 2007.  The details
appear below and are also available online at
www.quantumfoundations.ca.   I would be very grateful if you were to
share this information directly with all your Graduate Students by:

1.       Forwarding this email to them

2.       Posting the text (below) on your website, intranet and in
newsletters

3.       Downloading and hanging the poster located at
http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/Events/

The QFSS offers participants from a wide variety of disciplines
throughout theoretical physics a chance to learn about the exciting
research underway in the area of Quantum Foundations and to enjoy an
all expenses paid visit to Canada’s Perimeter Institute.  Thank you in
advance for sharing this new opportunity with your students.

Respectfully,

Quantum Foundations Summer School (QFSS)

Graduate Students in theoretical physics are encouraged to apply to
attend the new Quantum Foundations Summer School (QFSS) this summer at
Canada’s Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI).  The event
will be held from August 27th to 31st, 2007.

The Institute will host up to 40 Graduate Students with all expenses
paid – including international travel, a per diem, a banquet, and
accommodation.

Applications are encouraged from all Graduate Students working in all
areas of fundamental physics (including particle physics, string
theory, cosmology, quantum gravity, quantum information as well as
other disciplines). Places at the school will be awarded to the highest
ranked students applying independently of research specialty.

The deadline for applications is May 20th 2007.  Successful applicants
will be notified shortly afterwards.   Applications are to be made
online at www.quantumfoundations.ca.

About QFSS

The school offers participants the chance to learn about the exciting
research underway in the area of Quantum Foundations and to enjoy an
all expenses paid visit to Canada’s Perimeter Institute.

In Quantum Foundations one seeks to recognize, analyze, and resolve the
conceptual tensions within various frameworks and theories in
fundamental physics, where quantum theory is or might be applied, with
the aim of developing or replacing existing physical theories.

Lectures at the school will cover some or all of the following
subjects:  The measurement problem, Bell’s theorem and entanglement,
the time-symmetric formulation of quantum theory and weak measurements,
decoherence and emergence of classicality,  foundational issues in
quantum gravity, quantum foundations in the light of quantum
information, operational formulations of quantum theory,  macroscopic
quantum interference, interpretations of quantum theory.

The school will comprise approximately 10 two-hour lectures.  In
addition, students will be divided into small tutorial groups (of two
or three) and assigned a tutor for the duration of the school.

The lecturers include:

	▪ Jeremy Butterfield
	▪ Chris Fuchs
	▪ Chris Isham*
	▪ Adrian Kent
	▪ Tony Leggett*
	▪ Sandu Popescu
	▪ Ben Schumacher*
	▪ Rob Spekkens
	▪ Wojciech Zurek*

 (* provisionally accepted)

Organizers:

	▪ Howard Burton, Executive Director of Perimeter Institute
	▪ Lucien Hardy, Faculty, Perimeter Institute
