Speaker: Massimo Della Valle (INAF, Arcetri)

Title: GRB 060614: when a star dies in the shadow

Date: Wednesday, February 14th, 2007
Time: 12:00 noon
Venue: Villa Bazzoni

******************************************
Abstract:
In the first part of the talk I will give an update of the Supernova/Gamma-Ray Burst connection, with particular reference to the observational problem of associating GRBs to Hypernovae and computing their rates.
In the second part I will discuss the scientific problems raised by the very recent (and enigmatic) GRB 060614.

Title: Cosmic-ray Astrophysics with AMS-02

Date: Wednesday, February 21st, 2007
Time: 12:00 noon
Venue: Villa Bazzoni

Abstract:
Precise knowledge of the hadronic component of cosmic rays is needed to describe the cosmic ray production, acceleration and propagation mechanisms in our galaxy. Present measurements suffer from limitations coming from short exposure time, intrinsic instrumental limitations and restricted energy range. The AMS-02 experiment is a large acceptance magnetic spectrometer to perform high statistics studies of cosmic rays in space. The detector will operate on the International Space Station for more than 3 years. AMS-02 will precisely measure the cosmic ray fluxes of individual elements up to Z~25 in the rigidity range from ~1GV to ~1TV. AMS-02 will allow to test propagation models through the precise measurements of secondary-to-primary ratios as D/p, 3He/4He in the energy range few hundreds MeV to tens of GeV, and B/C, sub-Fe/Fe up to ~1TV. In particular the original measurements of 10Be/9Be will be performed with high accuracy allowing the understanding of the age of the cosmic-ray confinement and constraint models of the size of the galactic halo. Among the goal of the precision measurement of Cosmic Rays flux and composition by AMS-02 is the measurement for rare components like positrons, and antiprotons, or component never observed before like antideuterons and antinuclei. These measurements could allow to understand cosmic misteries like the origin of dark matter or the existence of nuclear antimatter.

Title: Scalar-tensor theory, the accelerating universe and the time-dependent fine-structure constant, part I
Date: Monday, March 5th, 2007
Time: 16:00
Venue: Villa Bazzoni

Abstract: The gravitational scalar field in the scalar-tensor theory is shown to provide a natural way to understand unique features of the accelerating universe. Further developing theoretical ideas allows us also to derive the time-dependent fine-structure constant, which is expected to constrain the parameters even more strongly than the way of acceleration. In part I (Monday 5, March in Osservatorio Astronomico di Trieste), emphases are placed mainly on the results to be compared with observations, while in part II (Monday 12, March in SISSA), more detailed analyses are applied to the theoretical foundations, including a general view on today's version of the cosmological constant problem, also comparison with the more phenomenological quintessence approach. The two parts, in either of which no prior experience on the scalar-tensor theory is required, can be attended as a sequence with certain subjects discussed somewhat repeatedly, though hopefully beyond mere redundancy.
