Titolo:
Observations of fluid induced deformation of the upper crust of the
Earth: Investigations about the large scale injection experiment at the
KTB site / Germany
Gerhard Jentzsch, Institut für Geowissenschaften,
Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena

At the site of the deep continental drilling in Germany (deep borehole
of 9.1 km), a pump test and an injection test were performed. Both
experiments lasted one year each with a one year relaxation time in
between. Besides geochemical investigations and hydraulic tests the
induced seismicity was monitored. From our group 5 borehole tiltmeters
were installed in depths of 25 to 40 meters to monitor surface
deformation. Since the injection took place in the pilot hole in the
depth of 4 km we choose distances of the borehole sites of 2.5 to 3.5 km
from the injection point. The results show a clear signal in tilt
related to the injection, although it was not possible to apply the
expected high pressure because of the high transmissibility of the
crust. Now, numerical modelling is undertaken to relate the observed
deformation to rock properties and different scenarios.
In the talk, an information is given about the whole experiment and
some findings, and especially about the results of the tilt measurements.
