SEMINAR SERIES 2006
Lagrangian Dispersion in Environmental Applications
by prof. Vincenzo Armenio, (DICA, Università di Trieste.)
October 20 (Friday) at 11.30 at the Seminar Room 239, 2nd Floor MB, ICTP, Trieste
ABSTRACT
The scope of the seminar is to illustrate the activity of the research group IDRA-AMB,
in the analysis of dispersed phases in environmental applications. The analysis is carried
out using a very innovative numerical tool, in which the dispersed phase is treated in a
Lagrangian way as a swarm of particles moving into an Eulerian turbulent field. The Eulerian
field is treated solving the fluid motion equations by the use of Large Eddy Simulation.
This approach allows obtaining very accurate results not dependent on the empirical
choice of relevant parameters (i.e. the turbulent diffusivity of the dispersed phase).
Three examples of application are discussed. The first is the case of dispersion of a
particulate in a flow field archetypal of a large scale tidal motion. In the second one the
upwelling of a vertical jet of fresh water in a stratified wind-driven, upper ocean turbulent
layer is discussed. Third, the case of dispersion of a particulate in a flow representative
of the stratified low atmosphere is shown.
The present talk has been given at the Workshop 'Environmental Dispersion Processes',
held at the Lorentz Center (University of Leiden) on Sept. 25 2006.
