Iowa State University has an immediate opening for a PhD student to begin studies in the Fall 2017 term. The student will be a member of a multi-institutional team sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy to compare different methods for modeling climate variability and change along with their impacts on the energy-water-land nexus.

Responsibilities of this position include regional climate modeling over the continental United States using the International Centre for Theoretical Physics Regional Climate Model (RegCM).  The student will develop and apply performance metrics to output from global and regional climate models in order to develop a deeper understanding of model behavior, skill and uncertainty. The student also will work closely with collaborators who are using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT).

The position requires programming experience in Fortran or C along with strong English oral and written communication skills.  The university's admissions requirements are summarized at https://www.admissions.iastate.edu/apply/pdf/intl_gr_instr.pdf   Note that applicants whose native language is not English must satisfy the minimum score on either the TOEFL or IELTS exam.  Experience with atmospheric models and Unix (Linux) computing environments is preferred.
