AgMIP Intent to establish RFP for research
teams in S-Asia and Sub-Saharran Africa
The Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project
(AgMIP; www.agmip.org) is establishing an
integrated, transdisciplinary framework for assessing climate
impacts on the agricultural sector while building capacity for
continuing agricultural assessment and management in developing
countries. AgMIP aims to better characterize food security risks
associated with climate variability and change, and to help identify
effective strategies for adaptation.
The Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland, acting through their Department for International
Development, is generously providing funds to support AgMIP
activities in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa through a
competitive Request For Proposals (RFP) from these regions. The RFPs
will be administered by Columbia University in the City of New York,
in partnership with the US Department of Agriculture – Agricultural
Research Service, and with expert guidance by an international team
of climate scientists, crop modelers, economists, and information
technology specialists.
Deadline for expressions of interest: Novembre 18, 2011

Conferences
and workshops
Call for abstracts, 4th World Climate Research Programme
International Conference on Reanalyses (ICR4), Silver Spring,
Maryland, USA, 7-11 May 2012
The Conference will provide an opportunity for the global community
to review and discuss the major observations and modeling research
associated with reanalyses, including the current uncertainties,
such as consistency of the time series, and the complexity of Earth
system. Characterizing the uncertainty and quality of reanalyses is
a task that reaches far beyond the international community of
developing institutions, and into the interdisciplinary research
community, especially those using the reanalyses products in their
research and applications.
Conference objectives:
Sharing understanding of the major challenges facing
reanalyses: the changing observing system and the integrated
Earth system.
Assessing the state of the disciplinary atmospheric, ocean and
land reanalyses, including the needs of the research community
for weather, ocean, hydrology and climate reanalyses.
Reviewing the new developments in reanalyses, models and
observations.
Call for abstracts:
Abstracts covering work on the following themes are requested.
Status and Plans: Major international reanalysis development,
including broad disciplinary overviews (e.g., atmosphere,
oceans, hydrology, cryosphere).
Validation and Metrics: Intercomparison and validation
studies; assessing the impact of the assimilation and analysis
increments; innovative diagnostics that characterize uncertainty
and the degree to which a reanalysis represents reality and
ultimately applicability for weather and climate research.
Data Assimilation: Data assimilation techniques and impact on
eventual reanalysis data products, especially producing a
climate quality time series.
Space and In Situ Observations: Studies on the quality and
stewardship of observations and their use in reanalyses and
exploiting new data types and sources.
Application in Support of Climate, Weather and Environmental
Services: Innovative research using reanalysis to study the
weather, ocean, hydrology and climate, including operational
climate monitoring, uncertainty, study of extremes and high
impact weather, climate assessment and end-to-end decision
making studies.
Deadline for Abstracts: January 6, 2012
Fifth WMO Workshop on the Impact of Various
Observing Systems on NWP, Sedona, AZ, United States, 22 to 25
May 2012
Co-sponsored by WMO and THORPEX. Contributions are expected on the
science questions listed, or on observation impact studies more
generally. More information: see 1st
announcement Deadline: November 15, 2011
Positions Post-doctoral Fellow in
Climate System Science
A post-doctoral position is available working with Professor Kerry
H. Cook on topics related to understanding processes of tropical
climate dynamics and regional-scale climate prediction over Africa
and the U.S. The position is located in the Climate System Science
group in the Department of Geological Sciences, in the Jackson
School of Geosciences.
This is a one-year position, renewable for an additional year
depending on performance and the availability of funds. Applicants
should have an earned Ph.D. in atmospheric or a related field, such
as oceanography or climate science. Experience in climate modeling
and climate analysis is required, including computational skill and
a demonstrated record of publication. Applicants should not have
held a permanent position since receiving the Ph.D.
The start date is approximately January 1, 2012, and the starting
salary is $50,000. Interested applicants should email a CV and
three references (name and email) to Kerry Cook at kc@jsg.utexas.edu. Post-doctoral position in
agricultural economics applied to West Africa – CIRED, Paris, 18
or 24 months, starting November 2011 or later
The International Research Center on Environment and Development
(CIRED ) is looking for a post-doctoral researcher in order to
develop an agricultural economics model applied to West Africa and
use it to: i) assess technical options allowing higher crop yields
through a better management of weather risk; ii) study adaptation to
climate change.
There is no deadline: this ad is valid until an applicant is hired.

SEES positions in climate and social sciences
For PhD students looking toward graduating in 2012 (or having
received a PhD within the last 4 years), the interdisciplinary NSF
Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability (SEES)
postdoctoral fellowships provide a great opportunity to work on
climate impacts and at the intersection of climate and social
sciences more broadly. The center for Robust Decision-making in
Climate and Energy Policy (RDCEP) at the University of Chicago is
looking for qualified applicants to prepare focused proposals for
postdoctoral fellowships located or co-located at the center.
Through the Computation Institute, a joint operation of the
University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory, applicants
will have access to advisers and resources at two of the countries
top research institutions.
Projects are expected to vary widely, but areas could include
land-use and land-cover change modeling and analysis (including
agriculture, forestry, hydrology, etc.), integrated assessment
modeling, life-cycle analysis, big data, computation, and
information technology at the intersection of climate and social
sciences, etc.
Deadline for applications to the program is December 5, 2011.
If you're interested, please contact Joshua W. Elliott, Research
Scientist and Fellow, Computation Institute, jelliott@ci.uchicago.edu,
ASAP to discuss project and supervisor options.
